Did you say « Arpitan » ?
Arpitan, or Francoprovençal, is one of the three Gallo-Romance languages, along with Occitan (the dialects of the south of France) and French (the dialects of the north of France). There are many local variations to this language. Although its use keeps declining, it has managed to survive with different accents and lexical forms (accents from Switzerland, Savoy, Lyon, Dauphiné... ). The term "Francoprovençal" was created by a 19th-century linguist. It corresponds to a language that was spoken under a variety of dialects. Half-way between the group of languages spoken in the north of France (hence the name "franco") and the group of languages of the south of France (hence "provençal" ), it is not for all that a mixture of French and Occitan, but a distinct Romance linguistic group. The original name "Franco-provençal" is now spelt without the hyphen to avoid this confusion and to emphasize the independent nature of Francoprovençal. (Some prefer the term "Arpitan" which does not refer to either French or Provençal.) The term Arpitan appeared in the 70's in the Val d'Aosta.
